Do you really need protein supplements?

There used to be a time when I would go round telling people they needed protein shakes to supplement their diet and OMG! Raised eyebrows everywhere! People would preach how you can get all you need from food and that protein shakes are a waste of money.


How times have changed! Nowadays tell any gym user that they may not “need” protein supplements and another kind of OMG happens! You could get lynched!

Protein is everywhere: shakes, bars, RTDs, cookies, candy, popcorn etc etc

I started this article with the heading, do you really need protein supplements, so I intend to address it. I am not writing this article to please anyone or to tell you what you want to hear. This article is the reality as I have seen it, having been in the sports nutrition industry for over 25 years.


Do you really need protein supplements

The answer really depends on a lot! What does it depend on, you ask? Here:

  • Your goals and the speed you want to achieve them.
  • Whether you are a meat-eater or a vegetarian/vegan.
  • Your genes! Yes, your genes/ blood type can control what sort of protein you actually need and how your body utilises it (but that’s another article!).
  • Your training schedule and how hard you are training.
  • Your stress levels. For example, if you are highly stressed, you may want to lay off red meat for a while, in which case you may need protein supplementation.
  • The frequency of your meals and portions.
  • Your digestive system and metabolism.
  • What other supplements you may be taking. For example, if you are taking a supplement that increases the efficiency of how your body deposits protein, then you may not need more protein.
  • Health issues. For example, if you have digestive troubles and food passes through you faster than other people, then you may need more protein.

The above is a small list! I am sure you just want an answer, so I will summarise. If you are a normal person, training hard, say 3-4 times a week and you are a meat-eater and eat meat at least twice a day, then chances are you don’t “need” protein supplements. I say “need”, in that supplementation can probably make a “marginal difference” to your gains.

Now, I know what you are thinking! “Hey, this dude’s company sells protein shakes and he is saying you don’t need them!”. That is not what I am saying. What I am saying is that if you have a good meat-based diet and you are not exactly a competitive bodybuilder and your budget is limited, you don’t really need protein supplements. Yes, they can make a difference to your gains but having worked with thousands of bodybuilders over the years, I would argue that you can get just as good gains if you had a good normal diet.

By a good normal diet, I mean where you eat proteins in the morning such as eggs, meats; where you eat proteins at lunch and at dinner. If you want to take extra protein and you don’t have the budget, then get some lactose-free milk and drink that at night!

If you have the budget and you don’t want to leave anything to chance, then take a protein shake once or twice a day but as I already said, for most normal meat-eaters, this is not necessary. If you are a vegetarian/vegan and you don’t know what you are doing with regards to protein, then you will need to supplement with protein shakes if you want to get huge (probably!).


So should you leave this site and save your money?


Not quite. Let’s say you have $100 to spend and you really want to get huge or very muscular or you want to lose a ton of weight. Now that I have given you the truth about whether you need protein shakes or not, I will tell you what would be a wise thing to do!

You would be much better off spending your $100 on capsules which contain active ingredients that you can otherwise never find in food (unlike protein) - not in sufficient quantities to make any difference anyway. These are the actives found in LA Muscle’s unique capsules.
