How does Testosterone affect women?

Testosterone may seem like a dirty word for women but the fact is that women need and utilise Testosterone just like men – albeit at smaller levels.

Ladies, Testosterone means more intelligence, creativity, drive, motivation and sense of well being. If you think having a little bit more Testosterone means you will become less feminine and lose your identity, then think again.

Testosterone is produced in women’s ovaries and adrenal glands. Testosterone contributes to women’s muscle and bone strength, libido and sex drive. Women produce between 1/7th and 1/20th of the Testosterone men produce but they DO produce it and they DO need it.

Research has shown that Testosterone does indeed influence well-being, assertiveness and even risk taking. This is a fact not disputed by even the most vocal anti-testosterone groups!

Genes, lifestyle and diet choices all influence the level of Testosterone in women. Just like men, a woman can increase their Testosterone levels naturally to higher levels and they may well see a difference in many aspects of their like. Assertiveness is an area that is being looked at by scientists.

You have heard the assumption that successful women have higher Testosterone levels? Well, this may or may not be the case but if Testosterone does have an effect on assertiveness, then some of it can be explained in that women with higher than average Testosterone levels can be more assertive and thus be able to deal with life situations differently. Much more research into this area is needed.
